Do you like dark chocolate? To me it's the
best sweet treat there is on earth! I know,
some people find it too bitter but I bet.. if
they knew about the health benefits of
dark chocolate
they'd consider to give
it a serious chance :)

Chocolate is plant derived, and as other
plant derived foods, fruits and veggies, it
can be part of a healthy balanced diet.

Okay, let's dive into the numerous…

Health Benefits of Dark Chocolate

To start with, chocolate contains flavanols
which have antioxidant properties… you
know how important antoxidants are to
counteract the negative effects of free
radicals which cause premature aging and
illnesses.

Another flavoniod dark chocolate has (in
high amounts) is Epicatechin. Flavoniods
help the body to keep cholesterol in check
and lower the risk of blood clots by
increasing the blood flow in the arteries.

Chocolate also has serotonin. Serotonin
is a hormone and neurotransmitter, and it
plays a key role in the regulation of:
mood, sleep and the constriction of blood
vessels.

Some experts say that this hormone could
play a role in other health issues such as
anxiety, appetite and migraine.

Chocolate has the ability to stimulate
your body's production of endorphins,
which are known as 'happy hormones' cuz,
they affect your emotions and block your
perception of pain.

Now, did you know that dark chocolate
is an excellent source of magnesium?

Magnesium is a very important mineral
that can help you prevent type-2 diabetes,
osteoporosis, coronary heart diseases and
stroke.

Magnesium regulates blood sugar levels
and blood pressure, and it's used to treat
insomnia, migraines, stress, depression
and panic attacks.

Dark chocolate also has iron, which is a
key mineral needed for proper thyroid
function and to ward off anemia – and the
best of all is that is tastes much better
than spinach or liver!

Researches also have found that dark
chocolate helps to prevent tooth decay
thanks to theobromine, a bitter alkaloid
found in the cacao plant. This substance
assists the elimination of a bacteria found
in the mouth, which contributes to tooth
decay.

Dark chocolate is also good for the brain
and to enhance memory, researchers say.

What's more interesting…

A study conducted at the Johns Hopkins
University concluded that this delicious
treat can protect the brain after a stroke
because it shields the nerve cells
preventing further damage.

So, is dark chocolate good for you?

In short, and considering all those health
benefits of dark chocolate
we mentioned…
YES!

Dark chocolate can be good for your physical
and emotional body – as long as you don't
overdo it.

You only need around 1.4oz of dark chocolate
a day. Sure, it tastes great, it's even
comforting, it melts in your mouth like
nothing else but, remember that it is high
in calories and fat content so.. don't eat
more than what your body needs and can
assimilate in a healthy way.

Ah, one last thing…

Do you think that all dark chocolate
provides the same health benefits?

The answer is NO.

Why?

Because the manufacturing process makes
a difference. Fortunately many chocolate
manufacturers know better these days and
are making dark chocolate (at least 70%
cacao) in a way that the precious flavoniods
get preserved.

Dark chocolate may be one of the secrets
of longevity! Tribes like the Kuna and
groups of people who consume raw and dark
chocolate on a daily bases have less
diseases, and longer life expectancy in
general.

Have you heard of Jeanne Louise Calment?
She was born in France and lived to be 122!
Well, she used to eat 2.5 pounds of bitter
dark chocolate every single week!!!

To your health & joy the dark chocolate way ;)
