Reduced Glutathione and Hypothyroidism

Today, we’ll be answering a question we
received from Lisa a few days ago, and
then will discuss an interesting topic:
reduced glutathione and hypothyroidism.

Here is the question:

Q:

I’ve a question regarding whey powder.

I am hypothyroid and am taking Synthroid
and Cytomel on a daily basis first thing
in the morning. About 1½ hours after
taking my medication I have breakfast.

I usually have a whey smoothie with
strawberries for breakfast. For the
liquid in the smoothie, I combine 1 oz
natural cranberry juice with 7 ounces
water and use stevia in place of a
sweetener.

My concern is I know I am not supposed
to have dairy products within 4 hours
of taking my thyroid medication. Would
the whey powder fall into the same
category as taking dairy? A pharmacist
said not to worry about it and to go
ahead with the whey, but I want to do
the right thing and get the most benefit
out of the foods I eat.

Thanks,
Lisa

A:

Yes, Lisa. Whey could interfere with
your thyroid medication.

Although there is a bit of controversy
about it many health practitioners
advise to wait 4 hours.

It’s hard to say how many hours would
be OK for You but, 30 minutes may be
not enough. You’d have to test it and
monitor if you notice a difference in
terms of symptoms and the lab tests
results — this would take time but it
is an option to consider if you really
want to know.

Unfortunately, there is not one definite
answer for everybody but remember that
studies have shown that is important to
take your thyroid meds with an empty
stomach and allow enough time before you
eat; 30-60 minutes, and 4 hours before
you take supplements that contain iron,
calcium and fiber for example.

Since whey contains calcium and iron
and both interfere with the absorption of
thyroid meds, it’s recommended to wait
4 hours – but again, that could vary
for each individual.

Now…

Different whey formulas have different
amounts of calcium and iron and that
factor could make a difference as well.

The other thing to keep in mind is that
not all whey proteins are the same when
it comes to quality.

Non-denatured whey offers a much
higher quality.

Why? Because non-denatured whey has
been processed at lower temperatures and
filtered in a way that keeps and preserves
key active proteins that easily get killed
when “regular” whey is processed.

These proteins are known as:
immunoglobulins and lactoferrin.

Reduced Glutathione and Hypothyroidism

Reduced glutathione levels, which often
is accompanied of low levels of vitamin E
and selenium deficiency, has been linked
to hypothyroidism, specially Hashimoto’s
disease.

According to experts non-denatured whey
is one of the the most effective ways to
boost glutathione levels in your body.

The reason is that this type of whey
contains the amino acids (glycine and
glutamic acid), which are needed by the
body to manufacture glutathione.

Glutathione performs different functions
in your body…

As a potent antioxidant it protects you
from free radical damage. It has anti-viral
and anti-microbial properties, and assists
the process of detoxification of the body.

It’s been found that it supports the
health of the thyroid gland by supporting
the function of the immune system

Reduced glutathione levels can lead to
autoimmune diseases — no wonder why many
people with Hashimoto’s disease have
reported health benefits after adding
glutathione as to their diet.

But not only autoimmune diseases are
linked to low glutathione. Leaky gut,
inflammatory disorders and food
sensitivities are also connected.

What depletes glutathione?

Stress and a high consumption of sugars
and carbs lower glutathione levels.

Foods, nutrients and herbs that can help
you boost your levels of glutathione
include:

Whey protein, ricotta and cottage cheese,
fish, poultry, meat, potatoes, acorn
squash, okra, asparagus, mango, papaya,
avocado, oat meal, selenium, gotu kola,
milk thistle, L-cysteine and alpha-lipoic
acid.

Well, to wrap up now let me say that
glutathione is called The Mother of
Antioxidants and is considered pivotal
to protect us from numerous illnesses.

To a healthy and joyful you,

Suzanne
